I’ve always been a summer girl. Give me sunshine, salty hair, and long beach days and I’m at my happiest. So when winter rolls in with its dark mornings and endless grey skies, I’ll be honest—it can feel a little heavy for a sunshine-loving soul.
That said, there is something special about a crisp winter walk along the Brighton seafront. When the sun makes an appearance and hits your face just right, you can’t help but turn towards it like a little chameleon, soaking up every last ray. But when the rain sets in (again), it’s easy to feel your mood dip.
So, here’s my guide to getting through the colder months and keeping your spirits high until beach days return.
Sauna: My Winter Non-Negotiable
Sauna-ing is a year-round love affair for me, but winter is when it really comes into its own. That hot–cold contrast works magic on both body and mind. It helps lower cortisol (that annoying stress hormone), releases endorphins and serotonin (hello happy mood), relaxes the body, and boosts blood flow to the brain—something peri- and menopause ladies will especially appreciate.
It’s also such a lovely way to catch up with friends or enjoy some guilt-free me time. No multitasking, no kids’ schedules—just warmth, calm, and connection. I always leave feeling refreshed, reset, and like a brand-new version of myself.
Coffee Shop Catch-Ups
Winter socialising looks a little different, especially when you’ve got kids. The park suddenly feels far less inviting when it’s cold and muddy, so cosy coffee shop catch-ups become the answer. Warm drinks, comfy seats, good chats—and no frozen fingers. Perfect.
Lean Into the Cosy
Winter is the season to fully embrace comfort, and great layers are everything. One of my favourite pieces this season is the Hartley Fleece—I’ve been eyeing it up for nearly a year, and it was worth the wait. It’s the ultimate cosy staple: perfect for lounging at home, winter walks, school runs, the gym, or days out with the kids.
Comfortable, versatile, and still feeling put-together—exactly what winter dressing should be.
Find a Hobby You Love
Getting out of the house regularly is such a game changer in winter. Joining a class, club, or weekly group gives you something to look forward to—even on those dark, drizzly evenings. I’ve recently joined a choir, and it’s been such a joy: meeting new people, socialising, and singing (which really is good for the soul).
Whether it’s pottery, painting, a pub quiz, skateboarding lessons (like my husband!), or the gym—having a commitment helps keep you from slipping into full winter hermit mode. It’s always hardest before you leave the house, but once you’re out, you never regret it.
Winter might not be my natural season, but with a few simple rituals, cosy layers, and reasons to get out and connect, it becomes a lot more manageable—and even enjoyable. Here’s to staying bright, warm, and uplifted until summer finds us again 💛
