Three Trousers Shapes for Every Autumn Mood

Published on

There's a moment every September when bare legs stop feeling like a good idea. The mornings turn crisp, the sea looks a little moodier, and suddenly all you want is a really good pair of trousers.

The good news? You don't need a wardrobe overhaul. Whether you're a swishy wide leg devotee, a smart tapered type or someone who'd live in joggers if they could (we see you), here's our guide to the three shapes that'll carry you right through to the first

Wide Leg

If autumn had a signature silhouette, this would be it. Wide leg trousers are relaxed without looking slouchy, elegant without trying too hard, and they move beautifully – there's nothing quite like a good swish on a blustery walk along the seafront.

They're also brilliantly forgiving. The generous cut skims rather than clings, so they're as comfortable at your desk as they are at Sunday lunch. Go for a high waist to lengthen the leg and a fabric with a bit of drape so they fall just right.

Style it

Tuck in a fitted knit or a slim roll neck to balance the volume, then add a pair of chunky boots or loafers. When the temperature really drops, throw a long coat over the top – wide legs and a longline coat is a combination that never fails.

Tapered

For the days when you want to look like you've got it all together (even if you've just found your keys in the fridge). Tapered trousers are roomier through the hip and thigh, then narrow towards the ankle for a neat, polished finish.

It's a shape that works hard: smart enough for the office, relaxed enough for the weekend, and the slimmer hem means nothing gets swamped by your footwear. They're especially good for showing off a favourite pair of boots or trainers.

Style it

Pair with a cosy oversized jumper for easy contrast, or a crisp shirt and cardigan for something a little more put together. Ankle boots are a natural match – the cropped, tapered hem sits just above them perfectly.

The Cotton Jogger

Let's be honest: this is the pair you'll reach for most. Cotton joggers are the ultimate in autumn comfort – soft, breathable and made for everything from school runs to slow Saturday mornings with a coffee and nowhere to be.

The trick is choosing a pair that looks as good as it feels. A clean cut, an elasticated waist and cuffed ankles keep things tidy, so you can wear them well beyond the sofa. Comfort, but make it chic.

Style it

Keep it laid back with a slouchy sweatshirt and trainers, or smarten things up with a fine knit, a padded gilet and a crossbody bag. They're brilliant for layering as the season goes on.

Which Pair Is Your Pair?

Still can't decide? Here's a quick cheat sheet.

Wide Leg

For when you want to feel effortlessly put together. Perfect for dinners out, days at the office and anyone who loves a bit of movement.

Tapered

For when you need one pair that does it all. Smart, versatile and made for showing off your favourite autumn boots.

Joggers

For when comfort is non-negotiable. Ideal for busy weekdays, lazy weekends and everything in between.

Autumn, Sorted

Honestly? We'd say one of each. A wide leg for the days you want to feel fabulous, a tapered pair for the days you need to look sharp and a pair of joggers for the days that call for a blanket and a good film. Autumn's looking up already.
