Hello Autumn: How to Make the Most of the Clocks Changing

Published on

The clocks are going back, the nights are getting longer and – the surest sign of all – the heating has officially come on in the Sugarhill office. Cue a collective cheer (and a lot of jumpers being draped over chairs).

Darker evenings don't have to mean hibernating until spring. Autumn is the season of crisp mornings, golden leaves and guilt-free cosiness, so here are my four favourite ways to make the most of it.

Get Cosy in a Warm Pub: Roast dinner, please – with extra gravy

Is there anything better than stepping in from the cold to a toasty pub on a Sunday afternoon? Bag a table by the fire if you can, peel off the layers and settle in for a proper roast – crispy potatoes, fluffy Yorkshires and lashings of gravy.

Round up your favourite people, order a sticky toffee pudding to share (or don't – no judgement here) and let the afternoon slip by. When it's dark by five, a long, lazy lunch is the perfect way to fill your weekend with warmth. Book ahead, though – everyone else has had the same idea.

Take a Crunchy Outdoor Walk: Your soul will thank you

Pull on your boots, wrap up warm and head out to see nature's most colourful show. The trees are turning every shade of amber, rust and gold – and is there a more satisfying sound than leaves crunching underfoot?

Whether it's a wander through the woods, a blustery stroll along the seafront or a ramble across the Downs, getting outdoors is always good for your soul. With fewer daylight hours, it's worth grabbing what light you can – even a quick lunchtime loop counts. Fresh air, a bit of movement and a moment to slow down. Just get out there (and it makes the roast taste even better).

Wrap Up Cosy: Leopard print is always a good idea

When the temperature drops, you need a layer you'll reach for again and again – and the Remi Fleece in Leopard Print is exactly that. Soft, snuggly and so easy to throw on, it's like wearing a hug, with a wild side.

Pop it over jeans and a knit for weekend walks, layer it up for the school run or wear it for a pub lunch. Leopard print is the neutral that never lets us down, and it goes with just about everything in your autumn wardrobe.

Get Baking: Something warming to go with a cuppa

Chilly afternoons were made for baking. Pop the radio on, dust off your apron and fill the kitchen with something warming – think spiced apple crumble, pumpkin muffins, a sticky ginger loaf, cinnamon buns or a classic banana bread.

There's nothing quite like the smell of something sweet in the oven while the rain taps on the window. Pair a warm slice with a big mug of tea, your comfiest layers and a good book, and you've got the perfect autumn evening. Bonus points for baking extra to share with friends.

Here's to the Cosy Season

The clocks going back isn't the end of the fun – it's an invitation to slow down, wrap up and enjoy the little things. So light the candles, put the kettle on and embrace everything that makes autumn so wonderful. 🍂
